Seven Attempts to Bring Down the Wall of Schizophrenia: On Bleuler Autism
The work of Swiss psychopathologist Eugen Bleuler, who was a contemporary of Freud, integrates organic and psychodynamic aspects, in the eld of the psychopathology of schizophrenia. is constitutes a model of qualitative re- search much more akin to the clinic than the current dominant quantitative approaches which reduce and con ne the analysis of these patients to psycho- metric scales. Without a comprehensive and integrated understanding of the factors determining the genesis and the persistence of “the group of schizophrenias” — schizophrenia being a term coined by Bleuler, along with the very term autism — it will be very hard to bring the patient back to the society from which he himself or she herself withdrew, recovering the interface between different forms of knowledge, beyond reductionism and overspecialization.
