On Melancholy
Melancholy is related to deep depression and pathological mourning, but it also has a relation to narcissism which is absent in the depression and mourning processes. Loss in melancholy is a narcissistic one, whether of an object or of a part of the subject, as self-esteem is gravely hit, unleashing, in a frequent way, preoccupying self-destructive developments. Over the centuries, artists and thinkers favoured one aspect or another of melancholy, often intending to recognize a connection of the state of melancholy with intelligence and creative geniality. The truth, however is that melancholy is not always associated to geniality and fecund intelligence. Often, as opposed to mania, it consists in a sterile and self-destructive apathy which may endanger the Ego itself.
