João dos Santos e a Saúde Mental Infantil
Abstract
João dos Santos (1913-1987) revolucionou as práticas da psiquiatria infantil praticada em Portugal, introduzindo novas metodologias e conhecimentos específicos aplicados à criança. A sua acção foi particularmente notória no âmbito da prevenção e da promoção da saúde mental na infância. O seu nome ficou ligado à criação de diversas instituições particulares com sentido preventivo e da primeira instituição estatal portuguesa vocacionada para a saúde mental infantil, o Centro de Saúde Mental Infantil de Lisboa. Ao longo da carreira, formou algumas gerações de discípulos e deixou uma obra escrita inovadora no campo da psiquiatria infantil e da psicopedagogia.
Summary
João dos Santos (1913-1987) revolutionalized the practices of the child psychiatry in Portugal, introducing new methodologies and specific knowledge applied to the child. His action was particularly remarkable in the ambit of the prevention and promotion of childhood mental health. He is linked to the creation of several private institutions with a preventive orientation and also the first Portuguese state institution for the child mental health, the Lisbon Centre of Child Mental Health. Throughout his career, he formed generations of disciples and left an innovative written work in the field of child psychiatry and psychopedagogy.
