The Work of Offshore Professionals in the Light of Psychodynamics of Work
The objective of this study was to understand the work of offshore professionals on oil and gas platforms in light of Work Psychodynamics. The aim was to identify the main types of work these professionals perform., according to the PDT typology. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted, and the data were analyzed using the Core Meaning Analysis technique. Working at sea involves ambiguous emotions and meanings that bring to the fore very particular experiences and intersubjective dynamics of the routine of isolation within the platforms. According to the results of the research, this routine is limited by the existence of numerous safety and conduct rules and regulations, given the daily experience of dangerous and risky situations. It was concluded that, concerning the dimensions of work in offshore work, the prescribed and collective types predominate, with the dimensions of work organization and work relations standing out. The dynamics are marked by astute intelligence, increased psychological stress, the search for recognition and gratitude to God; experiences range from pleasure linked to friendship and identification with work to suffering marked by longing for family, competitiveness, and states of health and illness that articulate physical and, above all, emotional demands, influenced by the risks and adverse conditions of offshore work.
