Abstract

Climate Change and Moral Arguments on Twitter: A Comparative Study Between Brazil and Portugal

The theme of climate change tends to generate a set of dilemmas and conflicts of interest that must be taken into account. This study aims to analyze tweets in Portuguese on the subject of climate change, trying to understand how Brazilian and Portuguese users position themselves and the forms of engagement on Twitter based on moral foundations. We analyzed publications on the social network between October 1, 2021, and April 1, 2022, from the automatic collection of tweets based on keywords e.g. "climate change" and "environment" (Portuguese equivalent), in tweets from Brazil and Portugal, in a total of 21,327 publications. The grounds invoked in the tweets from Portugal generate engagement with a Europeanist view of the of the subject, and the grounds invoked in the tweets from Brazil generate a type of dualistic engagement based on arguments for national political action.
