Music and Personality: The Relation Between Musical Consumption, Behaviour and Emotions
This is a study about the relation between personality and consumption of musical genres, following the typology of music preferences by P. J. Rentfrow and S. D. Gosling. The sample is constituted by 320 individuals, from 18 to 38 years old, using questionnaires and scales adapted or specifically constructed for this research. Energetic music is mostly consumed by the younger, rebellious music permeates all age groups, with the older respondents in their thirties equally showing a marked preference for the consumption of reflexive music. Musical choices seem not to be influenced, however, by gender and marital status. Less educated respondents tend to prefer energetic music, whereas those with greater educational qualifications prefer reflexive and rebellious music.
