As transformações na estrutura demográfica e na ordem familiar, e o facto de a velhice já não ser considerada um assunto exclusivo da família, enfatizam a importância, na sociedade de hoje, do problema da institucionalização dos idosos. Os lares de idosos constituem uma particular relação entre espaço, velhice e identidade. A vida num luar implica uma actividade persistente de construção do espaço e de afirmação da identidade através do espaço. O quarto é uma dimensão fundamental desta actividade, simultaneamente material e simbólica, sobretudo o modo como o idoso cria cenografia e marcas de identidade, para afirmar, com esta apropriação do espaço, um lugar seu no mundo.

The Last Place in the World: Considerations and Reconsiderations on Space and Old Age

The transformations in the demographical structure and the family order, and the fact that old age is no longer considered an issue exclusively related to family, emphasize the importance, in today’s society, of the problem of the institutionalization of elderly people. Homes for the elderly constitute a particular relation between space, old age and identity. Life in a Home implies a persistent activity of construction of space and affirmation of identity through space. The bedroom is a fundamental dimension of that activity, simultaneously material and symbolic, especially in the way the elderly person creates scenography and identity marks, to affirm, with that appropriation of space, one’s own place in the world.
