The dialectical relations between affectivity and intelligence, terms which are at the same time opposing and complementary in the formation of knowledge, are a persisting question in the history of western philosophical and scientific thought. This article guides the analysis along a historically oriented enchainment between Greek philosophy, Descartes, Hume, Kant, Piaget, and the contemporary philosophers of chaos and complexity theories. Affectivity is traditionally regarded as chaos, passion, irreality and unbalance, in contradistinction to rationality and the search for balance in intelligence. Philosophy has managed, to a certain extent, to deal better than science with the irrational in the dialectics between the functions of affectivity and intelligence. The function of affectivity is to lead towards irreality, to the fantastic, to the creation of new meanings; it is not a disorder that destroys, but a disorder that creates, generating new paths. This view of order based on chaos leads today to new perspectives with regard to the functions of affectivity and the essential role that sensitivity represents in knowledge, through the influence of paradigms of complexity and contingency in contemporary analytical practises (energy quantum, noise and chaos, information, informatics), and the complementarity between disordered phenomena and organizatory phenomena.</div> ER -
