Summary

Supression of Emotional Dependency and Eating: An Experimental Study on the Theory of Basic Assumption Groups of W.R. Three experimental situations were created, aiming at the activation of the emotional climate characteristic of each of the three basic assumptions proposed by Bion. The individual differences in valences for each basic assumption were measured using the WGFS questionnaire. The dependent variables were the ingestion of cookies, chocolates, ice-tea and coca-cola, and the following hypothesis were tested: 1) A significant increase in the relative ingestion of alimentary substances in the Fightflight and Pairing groups as opposed to the Dependence group is expected. 2) A positive correlation between the individual valences for Fight-flight and Pairing and the ingestion of alimentary substances is expected. The participants were randomly assigned to one of the three groups. A total of 28 participants performed the experiment (nine participants in the Fight-flight and Dependence groups, and ten participants in the Pairing group). Results show that the ingestion of cookies was significantly greater in the Fight-flight and Pairing groups relatively to the Dependence group. The ingestion of chocolates was also significantly greater in the Pairing group. Finally, both in the Fight-flight and Pairing groups, the ingestion of cookies was significantly correlated with the valences for fightflight and pairing.
}, number={13}, journal={Interações: Sociedade e as novas modernidades}, author={Chagas, Tiago and Ribeiro, João Paulo and Torres, Nuno}, year={2007}, month={Out.} }
